Images for teaching at VU: Images and teaching

Images and Teaching

For copyright purposes "images" are "artistic works" which can include works such as:

  • A diagram or technical drawing
  • A chart, map, table or plan (which can be taken from a publication)
  • Painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving and photograph
  • A building and model of building
  • Craft work
  • Cartoons

If you are selecting images for teaching and saving them to your computer then it helps to rename the image as you save so that you can easily find the image when needed.  Make a list as you go. It saves time as it can be tricky to find the image and information at a later date.

Save and rename. Use file names that describe the image so that you can locate it again.  Be consistent in naming your files.

Use Title + Type + Author (+Source, where possible)  This helps with attribution when using the image for your work.

Example: Poor file name DSC_010.jpg

                Better file name: Books_desk_pixabay.jpg

Refer to further information on the Attribution page of this guide.
