GenAI in Research: Using GenAI with Integrity

Research Integrity

The use of GenAI at any stage of the research life cycle is governed by principles of Research and Academic Integrity

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research 2018 ("the Code") provides the framework for conducting high-quality, responsible, and trustworthy research at Australian institutions.

The code informs Australian universities' policies on Research Integrity and Academic Integrity. All research conducted by academics and HDR students at VU is governed by VU's Research Integrity Policy and VU's Academic Integrity Policy

These frameworks require that research is conducted with:

honesty, rigour, trust (transparency), fairness, respect, responsibility and courage

These are important anchors for the use of GenAI assistance in research.

Questions to further deepen thoughtful and responsible use of GenAI in research:

  • Do you understand how the GenAI tool you want to use generates its outputs? Its basic algorithmic function, and inclusion/exclusion criteria? These questions are not just important for rigorous knowledge-making, but also for ensuring the reproducibility and future use of your research.
  • Is the GenAI tool mainstreaming some knowledge perspectives over others? If so, your use will exacerbate existing knowledge inequalities, and pose a challenge to knowledge diversity
  • Is your use of GenAI consistent with your, and your community's, goals around environmental justice? Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, and Graphical GenAIs have immense environmental impacts that are not yet on a sustainable path.
