Gender Studies on Kanopy

Field, C. (Director). (1980). The life and times of Rosie the Riveter [Video file]. Clarity Films. Retrieved March 3, 2025, from Kanopy.

Domestic. Shop girl. Waitress. Cook. Those were the jobs for women in the 1930's. Suddenly the U.S. entry into World War II created an unprecedented demand for new workers. After whirlwind training, women found themselves doing "men's work." Rosie the Riveter was born — the symbol of working women during World War II. When the war was over, Rosie wanted to stay. But neither the structure of the American economy nor the dominant view of women's place in society sustained such hopes.

The story is told by the women themselves — five former “Rosies” who movingly recall their histories working in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco during the war. Their testimony is interwoven with rare archival recruitment films, stills, posters, ads and music from the period which contrast their experiences with the popular legend and mythology of Rosie the Riveter.

Longinotto, K. Williams, J. (Director). (1994). Dream girls [Video file]. Royal Anthropological Institute. Retrieved March 3, 2025, from Kanopy.

This award-winning film opens a door into the amazing world of the Takarazuka Revue, the all-female theatre troupe in Japan. Thousands of young women aspire to perform in the Revue’s glitzy musical spectaculars and the millions of women who attend the shows idolise the romantic heroes like heartthrob pop starts. DREAM GIRLS offers a compelling insight into gender and sexual identity and the contradictions experienced by Japanese women today.

Zehtabchi, R. (Director). (2020). A woman's place [Video file]. Vox Media. Retrieved March 3, 2025, from Kanopy.

Despite the grit, the harassment, and the struggle, these three chefs have carved a well-deserved space for themselves in the culinary industry. Watch as butcher Etana Diaz, chef Marielle Fabie, and restaurateur Karyn Tomlinson speak of their shared experience as women facing and overcoming institutionalized sexism in the new documentary, directed by Academy Award winner Rayka Zehtabchi.

Calvo, P. Jasim, P. (Director). (2021). Luchadoras [Video file]. Pragda. Retrieved March 3, 2025, from Kanopy.

An intimate portrait of three courageous female Luchadoras (wrestlers) from Ciudad Juárez. Despite being surrounded by machismo, they redefine the image of women in Mexico.

They interview experts on gender, tell stories about their own experiences, and give lots of practical advice to help you succeed in spite of the obstacles.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Ancestors, Elders and families of the Kulin Nation (Melbourne campuses), the Eora Nation (Sydney campus) and the Yulara/Yugarapul and Turrbal Nation (Brisbane campus) who are the traditional owners of University land. As we share our own knowledge practices within the University, may we pay respect to the deep knowledge embedded within the Aboriginal community and recognise their ownership of Country.

We acknowledge that the land on which we meet, learn, and share knowledge is a place of age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal, and that the Traditional Owners living culture and practices have a unique role in the life of this region.
