Texts for Teaching at VU: Overview

Selecting a text for teaching

Is a text you are considering available in electronic format?

As teaching at VU has expanded to online and hybrid as well as onsite, availability of student reading material in an online format is becoming a more important factor in choosing what material to use in teaching units of study.

Electronic textbooksNumber 2 availability

A book may be available on Kindle, Redshelf, or VitalSource for purchase by an individual. This does not necessarily mean the publisher will make the book electronically available to an institutional library.

A ebook may be available to a geographic location e.g. North America. This does not necessarily mean the publisher will make the book electronically available to an institutional library in Australia.

The library looks for the option which provides most benefits for the students. Contact your College Librarian through individual emails or via LibrarianLT@vu.edu.au.

Number 3

Gain a basic understanding on models of electronic textbook available through the VU Library

Publishers provide access to electronic book content under various access models. These include differences such as the number of students who can read a text at the same time, and features such as ability to print, copy and save a limited number of pages, search within the book, annotate (highlight or create notes), bookmark pages, and share links.

Look through the options on this guideNumber 4

This guide features electronic textbook packages which:

  • were purchased in 2022 and 2023 to support teaching staff
  • are available to all staff and students whether studying on-campus, online or off-shore. (VU authenication required.)
  • do not limit the number of students viewing the electronic content
  • provide options for downloading chapters and additional features when reading through the (authenicated) publisher platforms

Use eReserve Readings in VU Collaborate

eReserve Readings provide students access to online material in units for required and optional readings. Students are provided with a consistent and organised interface for their unit readings. The tool allows teaching staff to store, review, organise and share student readings within VU Collaborate.

Educator Insights allows teaching staff to see levels of student engagement with reading list resources in real time. The function provides a count of  Student Access, Resource Count, Unique Student Access, and Student Engagement. Educator Insights is relevant for units spaces where students are enrolled.it readings.
