APA referencing - introduction

The referencing style required for units in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Architectural Engineering) is APA style. However, it is always a good idea to confirm with individual unit coordinators as to which referencing style is required.

Information about why you need to reference is available in the Referencing & Plagiarism guide.

Access the Victoria University APA Referencing Guide.

APA Referencing - journal article

A basic reference list entry for a journal article in APA must include:

  • Author or authors. The surname is followed by first initials.
  • Year of publication of the article (in round brackets).
  • Article title.
  • Journal title (in italics).
  • Volume of journal (in italics).
  • Issue of journal (no italics).
  • Page numbers of article.
  • DOI - digital object identifier (if available)
  • The first line of each citation is left adjusted. Every subsequent line is indented 5-7 spaces.

Online journal article example:

Mio, A., Barbera, E., Massi Pavan, A., Bertucco, A., & Fermeglia, M. (2024). Sustainability analysis of hydrogen production processes. International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 54, 540–553. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhydene.2023.06.122

Refer to the Victoria University APA Guide for more referencing examples.

What is a DOI?

A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a string of numbers, letters and symbols used to uniquely identify an article or document and to provide it with a permanent electronic link. APA referencing style requires the DOI (where available) to be included in the Reference List citation.

     https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhydene.2023.06.122

A DOI will help your reader easily locate a document from your citation.
