FYRE (First Year Research Essentials): Finding Material

In everyday life the first place we turn to for information is the internet.

That's not a bad thing, but it's not always appropriate for university work. Why is that?

The information you use is expected to be reliable and verifiable, and a lot of information on the internet is not that.

What materials can I use in my assessments? (video)

Yes, you can use. No, not suitable
Textbooks Anonymous information
Scholarly publications, eg journal articles Unsupported opinions
Government reports Commercial information
Case law Anything which appears to have an agenda or appears biased

Where do I find information like this?

  • Course readings - your course materials will include links to lots of sources that your teachers have selected
  • VU Library - you have automatic access to thousands of textbooks, journals, video resources and others
  • Google Scholar - a search engine that searches only journals, theses and reports
