Using Databases to Locate Tests

  • When searching PsycINFO for general information on a specific test, type in the full name of the test in the search box. Put the test name in quotes to search the words as a phrase. You may want to type the name of the test you are interested in in the search box then click on the Select a Field (Optional) box and change to  TM Tests & Measures. To find out if the full-text of the test is included in the document add the term appended* to your search.

Consider adding to your search terms the following assessment keywords:  methodology, research, qualitative, quantitative,  "social surveys" , questionnaires, interviewing, experiments, "experimental design": e.g., in the PsycINFO database a search strategy might include something like this: depression AND (assessment OR interview OR inventory OR measur* OR questionnaire OR rating OR scale OR survey OR test OR tool).

  • In the first search box in ERIC database enter your keywords and in the second box type tests/questionnaires and choose PU Publication Type from the menu.

  • To find copies of surveys or questionnaires in the  ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database look in the appendices of dissertations. Include the words test, survey, or questionnaire in your search along with the term you are measuring. For example body image and (test or survey or questionnaire). Then, add a search string such as consider using these additional terms as part of your search

  • In the CINAHL database type keywords related to your topic and choose IN Instrumentation from the menu. Or, in one search box type your keywords and in the second box type questionnaire  OR scale and choose PT Publication Type from the menu. Alternatively, in the CINAHL Subject Headings search box, type Research Instruments and click Browse.

  • In MEDLINE  try including keywords such as questionnaire, inventories, scale measure, measurements, survey, and psychometrics.
