FYRE (First Year Research Essentials): Academic Integrity

At university you will hear about Academic Integrity. What does this mean?

It is the term used to describe the standards you are expected to meet in your course work and assignments.

The main parts of it are:

  • The work you hand in is your own.
  • You acknowledge and respect the work of others.
  • You are treated fairly, and you treat others fairly
  • Courage to commit to the values of your education

Your work

When you do your course work you will be drawing on other people's work. Be aware of:

  • Plagiarism. This is where you pass off other people's work as your own
    • you can use other people's ideas, in fact you are expected to. But you just must acknowledge them using a reference.
    • there are rules about how to reference. See the referencing page for more detail.
    • failing to acknowledge sources is plagiarism, even if it is accidental.
  • Copyright.
    • you can copy material for study but there are limits.
    • you cannot copy material to distribute or sell without permission.
  • Cheating
    • this includes copying from another student or paying someone to do your work,
    • copying from a website or content sharing platform
