'Duration of copyright' video transcript
How long does copyright last? Determining whether something is still protected by copyright can be quite complex. Some detective work might be required to determine whether copyright is still in effect. It is important to note that a single work may have more than one associated copyright. For example, a film, along with its musical score, screenplay and, perhaps, broadcast. Once copyright on a work expires, it enters the public domain. Public domain works may be used without requiring permission. As a general guideline, if a work was created before 1955, and the creator of that work died before 1955 then it is likely to be in the public domain. However, it is important to remember that copyright may be transferred to a new owner, meaning that copyright may persist although the original creator is long dead.
