Jean McLean has made significant contributions to Victoria University (VU) through her extensive service and advocacy. She served as a Councillor of VU for nine years and has been associated with the University for a total of 17 years. In recognition of her service, VU awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2005 and later appointed her as an Honorary Fellow. Her advocacy for East Timor's independence led to VU's involvement in supporting the nation's development. She has championed the University's continued role in the advancement of Timor-Leste and its people.
To honor her distinguished career and contributions, VU established the Jean McLean Oration, a biennial event that highlights her impact as a politician and activist, particularly regarding Timor-Leste.
