In summary

Established: May 1991

Ended: August 1991, when it was renamed the Western Metropolitan College of TAFE

Located: Footscray Nicholson Street, Newport, Werribee

Gellibrand College of TAFE was formed when the Newport and Footscray Colleges of TAFE merged on 1 May 1991. It was named after the explorer and settler Joseph Gellibrand. Almost immediately after its establishment, discussions began to change the name of the College of TAFE, as it was felt the name did not resonate with the local community. The Council received formal permission to change the name on 22 July 1991, and as of 1 August 1991, the College was renamed to the Western Metropolitan College of TAFE (WMCOT - the name it had been known by during the planning of the amalgamations).
